AAEM Members to be Featured on "Untold Stories of the ER"

Mark your calendars! AAEM members Dr. David Meyers and Dr. Sudip Bose will be sharing stories on this season's premiere of "Untold Stories of the ER" on Sunday, October 6, 9:00pm EST on Discovery Fit & Health and Saturday, October 12, 9:00pm EST on TLC. (Times may vary, check local listings).

Deadly Perfection

"I think the patient is still alive."
"What patient?" I asked
"The one who died. She's not dead."

Imagine getting THAT statement from a nurse regarding the patient you finished coding a short (but not that short) time ago. You're new on staff at a prestigious community hospital. Your boss and the medical staff expect perfection. You've already had a rocky start your first year - not at all like the academic hospital you came from. And you've just pronounced a relatively young woman dead who, in fact, is not. You've told her daughter her mom died. She mourned the loss only long enough for you to have to go back and tell her that her mom may not, in fact, actually be dead. She looks at you like you've just grown a second head. You lament your new membership in the "I-prounced-them-dead-when-they-were-not" club, as membership in this club usually includes attendance at Clinical Event conferences and possibly attorneys offices. Then imagine actually resuscitating your patient including invasive life-saving procedures, only to be told one of your procedures was done incorrectly, and may be killing her. This is my case from several years ago, and what is re-enacted in the Untold Sories of the ER episode: "Dangerous Perfection". This was a case that changed my view of life and my role as healer in the lives of others.
